A hospital-based assessment of the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotic usage to that of regular antibiotics usage in patients undergoing elective caesarean section: A comparative study

Aim: This study was planned to assess the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotic usage that regular antibiotics in patients undergoing elective surgeries. Material and Methods: A comparative Prospective conducted Department obstetrics gynaecology, Mamata Academy Medical Sciences, Bachupally, Hyderabad, India for period 2 years. Total 200 Patients LSCS BMI < 30 were include this study. Group - received injection Ceftriaxone 1gm. intravenous stat at time induction anesthesia. B ampicillin metronidazole 1 day followed by oral next 5 days. Temperature monitoring, vital signs, abdominal, perineal examinations performed daily till 5-7 Results: randomly divided on alternate number basis, groups (Group 1gm iv days) each consisted 100 patients. Mean age 24.5±4.2 years group & 23.4±3.8 B. admission 27.9±7.8 kg/m² 28.8± 6.2 respectively. duration surgery 45.8±6.8 min 46.1±5.4 Average blood loss 645±70 670±75 comparable. days hospitalisation 4.6±4.1 5.4±3.1 History previous laparotomy like LSCS, ectopic surgery, etc. present 42 36 from Fever most common morbidity noted – 7& -5) urinary tract infection -7), wound infection, endometritis early neonatal sepsis. Statistical difference between non-significant all morbidities. Conclusion: We conclude single dose prophylaxis is as effective conventional multi therapy.
